Entry requirements

You will need a grade 7 or higher in GCSE Maths.

What will I learn on the course?

A Level Mathematics builds on the knowledge and skills developed at GCSE, introducing more advanced mathematical concepts and techniques. You will study pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics. Topics include algebra, functions, calculus, trigonometry, probability, statistical distributions, forces and motion. You will develop your problem-solving, logical reasoning and analytical skills, learning how to apply mathematics to real-world situations.

How will I be assessed?

A Level Mathematics is assessed through three written examinations, usually taken at the end of the two-year course. Each examination is two hours long and contributes one-third of the final A Level grade. The papers cover pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics. There is no coursework, so success depends on developing a secure understanding of the content, practising mathematical techniques and applying your knowledge to unfamiliar problems.

For whom is the course suitable?

A Level Mathematics is suitable for students who enjoy problem-solving, logical thinking and working with numbers and algebra. You should be confident with GCSE Mathematics and have a strong foundation in algebraic techniques. The course requires commitment, independent study and regular practice, as many topics build on knowledge developed earlier in the course. It is an excellent choice for students who want to develop their analytical skills and keep a wide range of university and career options open.

What could I do at the end of the course?

A Level Mathematics is highly valued by universities and employers and can open doors to a wide range of further study and career opportunities. It is particularly useful for degrees in mathematics, engineering, physics, economics, computing and other science-related subjects. Career pathways include engineering, finance, data analysis, accountancy, computing and scientific research. It also provides valuable skills for many other fields, including business and management.
